Problem opening SSMS Express

Hi,
I experience a problem after installing "SQL Server 2005 Books On Line"
(December 2005) on my notebook, which have also an installation of SQL
Server 2005 Express Edition. Management Studio Express Edition (November
CTP) don't start...
If I try to open it, nothing happens. Anyone can help me?

problem intstalling SQLEXPR.EXE

everytime i try installing SQLEXPR.EXE.. it will give mi a problem saying SQL server 2005 setup has detect incompatible components from beta verisons of VS, .net framework, or SQL server 2005.

i did uninstall all beta version.. n try again.. but still e same problem..

how can it be solve and whats e probem?

Take a look at the setup logs to get a more specific idea which component is causing the problem. There a number of components that got installed when you installed the Beta, you need to get rid of all of them.

Setup logs are located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOGS.

There are several threads on solving this error in the SQL Setup forum, so you should search that forum for the details.

Problem installing SSQL Server 2000 client tools

Hi,

I'm trying to re-install SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine and
SQL Server client tools. I have succesfully re-installed the desktop engine,
but I am getting the following error message when attempting to re-install the
client tools.

"Setup has detected an existing client tools only installation.
Please use the maintenance mode to add client components"

Unfortunately the Upgrade/Add/Remove option is greyed out as
an install option.

I attempted the registry hive rebuild option and the install appeared
to succeed. However, I cannot access any tools (Enterprise Manager
comes up with the message "The selected file cannot be found").

At this point, the desktop engine appears in Add/Remove programs
Window, but no other SQL Server components.

Any help very much appreciated!

Problem installing SQL2K on WinXP Home

Hello there!

I am trying to install MS SQL 2000 Server on Windows XP Home edition.
I found in Microsoft that the above installation is possible.
But when i run the installation, i am getting a black screen that is
closes after a second. Nothing else happens.
Any ideas how to troubleshoot this?

I searched for the file you are referring but with no success. I cannot find such a file anywhere on my disk.

Any other ideas?!

|||From the sqlstp.log it is clear that the unattended installation on both the nodes failed with return code 2

Error code 2 ==> "The system cannot find the file specified."
Next step will be to go the AVLNODO1 and AVLNODO1 and review the sqlstpN.log where N is an integer.

problem installing Sql Server SP4

Hello,
I am getting the following error message when installing sp4 on a 2nd
instance of sql server 2k on a win2003 server
"Specified file cannot be opened as write. Ensure file is not is use and
restart setup
C:\Program Files\Sql Server\80\Shared\msxmlsql.dll"
I rebooted the server and still get the same error message. When I click OK
on the error message sp4 setup shuts down. Any suggestions appreciated what
I can do to get around this problem.

RichI fixed the problem. Turns out that I had a 2nd instance (a new instance of
sql server running). I had to shut down the first instance. THat was what
was using the file below. I was then able to lnstall sp4.

Problem installing SQL Server Reporting Services

I've been trying to install the MSDN Developers edition of SQL Server
Reporting Services for serveral hours. My environment is as follows:
XP Pro, SQL Server 2000, SQL Server SP3a, .Net Framework, VS.Net
(Enterprise).
I have uninstalled/reinstalled SQL Server (and SP3a) - several times.
The problem is that when I try to install the RS I only get the option
to install the Client Components (not very helpful for developing
reports locally)
While this looks like a great tool I'm inclined to go back to using
Crystal Reports unless I can get this resolved without <<<wasting>>
much more time!
Anyone have any thoughts?
GlennYou only want the client app on your computer. You can only install the RS
Enterprise on a server. The client app works perfectly fine for developing
reports and deploying them locally to view them. You will have to setup a
separate report server to deploy reports into production, if I understand
your needs.

Do you have XP Pro with SP1?
Another point to consider, XP Pro does not have IIS by default running. Have
you installed IIS? Add/Remove Programs Windows Components.
IIS needs to be installed plus ASP.Net needs to be installed and running. My
guess is something with the web server is not setup correctly.

Enterprise and Developer set up on one server machine, Developer on 2
other desktops. If you access Report Manager from the Server machine,
everything looks fine. But Report Manager accessed from the
non-server machines shows the top banner only... No tabs, no folders,
nothing below the line, so a developer can't upload without switching
over to the server, and even then there are often errors.
Is there some configuration subtlety we missed?
Otherwise this thing is giving me problems with OutOfMemory errors on
local debugs that I know aren't too big.
Ideas?

My solution was to re-install WIN XP Pro SP1. Once SP1 was
re-installed RS installed with no further problems.

How ever hard i tried to install "SQL Server Express CTP april 2005" i get errors. Earlier my system had previous version (beta 2) of the same. I removed and tried to install but cannot.

My system is already installed with MSDE 2000, Is it necessary to uninstall that ?

My another system is installed with SQL Server 2000 , i could also not able to install / rather i could not connect to SQL Express however tried.

What error do you get?
What OS and version are you installing on?
Is this machine connected to a domain? Is it in a workgroup?
Could you attach the setup logs?

I only installed the SQL Server. I'll start the install for the services now and get back to you later when it finishes. It shouldn't take more than a few days! |||Good news, it only took 3.5 more hours to install all the services. Yes, it looked like it was hung there a few times, but I just let it go. I don't believe 1282 is a Setup error code; it's probably a Windows error code. 1282 translates to stack buffer overflow. We did fix one or two such issues a long time back. If the version of Express you're trying to install is pre-RTM then please download the RTM version or the remastered Express SP1 which should be available soon, and try again. If you're already trying with RTM then I suspect we're going to need to see the complete SQL Install logs to debug your problem.

Problem installing SQL Server 2005 SP2

The problem seems to be with the authentication. It froze when Windows
updates attempted to install it, so I downloaded the exe from the ms
site. However this freezes too while running the "Authentication
Verification". This also happens if I just click the Test button.
I tried both Windows Authentication and SQL authentication and same
happens on both.
Any ideas what could cause this problem?

III ). It didn't really locked up though,
but it took good 10 minutes... could it be resource related in your case
too?

No - this pc is a P4 3 GHz, 1GB memory and about 6 GB free disk space.
I also let it run for about an hour before I used the Task Manager to
kill it.

You may have connectivity problems to the AD? What do the upgrade logs say?

Problem installing SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2

I tried to run the new SP2 and it crashes. I get the dialog asking to send
the crash data to microsoft.
I then checked the upgrade log and found a message saying that it could not
log into the server. I know it had the right password because the service
pack checks that near the begining.
I then checked the service and noticed that is was stopped. I then tried to
manually start and stop the service during the upgrade each time I saw that
it needed to start or stop it by the messages that came up. That didn't work
.
It got to a point later that said it could not stop the service.
I then changed the login of the services themselves to be tan admin user.
That seemed to allow the service pack to start and stop the service ok, but
it still crashes near the end now. The message is again that it can't log in
.
I also must mention that after the first time this happened the small icon
on the lower right of the tray that is the sql server is gone.
Please help. I need to get the SP2 to succeed so that it will be back to

I am having the same problem, Found that I could install the package seperatly in some cases but the SQL Install for Dev edition and Express edition (Through VS Setup) does not work and the full setup fails.

|||I was able to install the SQL Express Edition with the latest Service pack intergrated into the instal, but then installing the developer edition over the top I get the same errors. Dev edition will not install.|||

I have tried transfering the Files from the CD to the Hard Drive, and it does not work. I have even re downloaded the msxml package from MS Downloads and swapped it into the install to see if that works. But still nothing seems to work.

anyone get a solution to this problem, i;m having similar issues installing SQL Server 2005 standard. Keeps failing on MSXML6. I've tried uninstalling msxml6 and reinstalling from sql disk and a fresh download from ms site but always get "the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation"

I run regmon from sysinternals - lots of reg activity, so hard to analyse, but I noticed that msiexec.exe was trying to get HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\TMAS_OEHook.dll key but getting "NOT FOUND" - this is part of trend pc cillin 12 - not sure if relevant.

I tried uninstalling msxml6 but it wouldn't saying "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."

So I found this forum post

I had the same issues installing MSXML6.0 with my SQL Server 2005 Express Edition as part of CRM Dynamics 3.0. Despite there being no policy (local or global) in place to enforce such a thing, I kept getting a failed installation of SQL Express due to an issue with MSXML6.0. Whenever I tried to install MSXML6.0 stand-alone, all I would receive is this blasted error message:

"The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation"

I tried several things over several hours including the following:

- registered then unregistered Windows installer package

- uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Installer package

- logging on as local admin to install

- creating a policy and enforcing the use of Windows Installer, as well as elevating the install rights of everyone.

- getting desperate I removed and reinstalled the .NET framework 1.1, 2 and 3 (this was the last thing I changed before having the issues)

- basically tried every recommendation I found through Google on every forum...TO NO AVAIL.

I used the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (available here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301) to remove the install configuration for MSXML6.0.

After that being done, everything works fine now and no words can express my relief...
