Problem scheduling DTS packages

I am getting the following error whenever I schedule a new DTS package:
SQL Server does not exist or access denied
This is new, all of my older scheduled packages run without any problem.
This just started occuring during the past week and is occuring on all of my
SQL Servers (7 and 2000).
Any ideas?John
Well , Perhaps you are created the DTS package on your computer and when
you execute the package it runs under account of your computer (SQL Agent
service)
By default, the owner of that service is LocalSystem (with has many
Administrator-style permission, but *NO* access to any network resources).
So, change the account of that service to a Domain Admin account (or other
suitable account with permissions on both computers (server and yours)

Problem remotely stopping and starting services in SQL Server 2005

Hi guys

I've been dealing with a few problems with SQL Server 2005.

We don't want to give our DBA's local administrator access to the servers so we had a problem with SSIS which I managed to resolve by adding their global group into the local DCOm group and modifying the security properties of MsDtsServer.

Another problem I've come across is when you log into Management Studio as an account that has local administrator access to the server you have the Green symbol next to the registered server, you can then right click and Stop, Restart services etc.

If I log into Management Studio with an account that has full SQL sysadmin rights but not local administrator rights to the server then the Green symbol doesn't appear and the Stop, restart options are all greyed out - all other functionality appears okay, they just seem to lose the ability to remotely stop and start services.

All of the above is with Windows Firewall turned off, if the user has local administrator rights but the SQL Server has the Windows Firewall switched on they are unable to remotely stop and restart services.

Port 1433 is open on the firewall and program execptions are there for sqlbrowse.exe

Anyone come across this particular problem before?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

HanleyI like the easy questions!

The problem is that only members of the Local Administrators group have permission to start and stop services on a Windows machine by default. You'll have to modify the ACLs on the machine to grant the permission needed to start and stop the service(s). There's a great article (http://www.windowsitpro.com/Articles/ArticleID/48881/48881.html?Ad=1) at Windows IT Pro with the step-by-step for doing this.

For what it is worth, I would STRONGLY recommend creating a local (machine) group and granting it the necessary privleges via the ACL, then creating a DBA group in AD and making that domain group a member of the local group. While this seems a bit arcane, it means that when you put a login into the DBA group in AD, they inherit the ability to start and stop the SQL Services.

-PatP|||Using group policy I assigned my user account (SQLTest) Start, Stop and Pause permissions to MSSQLSVC and SQL Server Agent.

When I load management studio using this ID I'm still unable to stop or start the services. If I put the ID into local admin it works okay?

2nd Question - even with my ID in the local administrators group it doesn't work with the firewall turned on, am I missing any exceptions, these are what I have:

Program Exceptions

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Binn\sqlservr.exe:*:enabled:M S SQLServer

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\MsDtsSrvr.exe:*:enabled:MS DTS

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server/90\Shares\sqlbrowser.exe:*:enabled : SQL Browser

Port Exceptions

1433:TCP:*:enabled : SQL Server
1434:UDP:*:enabled : SQL Instance
2725:TCP:*:enabled : SQL Analysis Services
135:TCP:*:enabled : SQL Integration Services

As said above, even using an ID with local admin permissions to the server I still cannot remotely stop and start SQL services with the firewall turned on.

Problem Pulling From Access DB

We are currently moving existing SSIS packages from one server to another. The former server is 32 bit and the new server is 64 bit clustered (not sure if that's relevant or not, though).

One package in particular is giving me a headache. It pulls from an access file to sql server 2005 table. We set up the security as don't save senstive and put the connection strings in a config file. We had to set the original job up to run the package step under a proxy account to get it to work.

If we right click on the package through the SSIS Store interface and execute it runs fine. However when we try to run it through the scheduled job, it fails. I very much appears to be a permissions issue on the proxy account. The person setting up the server is somewhat new to the area of SQL Servers, so they cannot provide much feedback. We're very much in a tweak until it works position, unfortunately.

Here are the errors that I am getting, one from the history of the job, one from the SQL Server logging. Does anyone have a suggestion, and if it is a permissions issue, where to look? I've been at this for days, so I've tried several different approaches. It seems like right now that I almost got it to work, but it seems like the connection to the access db is failing. But if that's the case, why does it run fine through the proxy on the original server (using same account)? I guess that very well could come down to the 64 bit problem (saw this on some other posts). I should mention that I set up the package as Run64BitRuntime = false. Do I need to rethink this as a batch file using DTExec? That was actually our original solution on the former server, but we could never get to work.

component "OLE DB Source" (1) failed validation and returned error code 0xC020801C.

OK I solved the problem myself. This was in fact a 32-bit vs. 64-bit problem, even though the lovely errors I was getting didn't even come close to explaing that to me. I provided a link below on how to run a package in a scheduled job that hits a Jet 4.0 connection (I think excel may have this problem also).

But, I hate when people simply do that (include link), so here's how I fixed it.

Create a new scheduled job.
Add a new step.
When you edit the step, the 'Type' will be "Operating System (cmdExec)"
You can use DtExecUI to create your command line step, but here is what I used exactly - quotation mark locations are VERY important. Also, I think you may need to have the complete call on one line:

\\Server\E$\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server (x86)\90\DTS\Binn\DTExec.exe /DTS "\MSDB_ATC\PACKAGE_NAME" /SERVER "SERVER_NAME" /CONFIGFILE "\\Server\R$\\PACKAGE_CONFIG.dtsConfig" /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF /REPORTING EW

Edit command to match yours, and paste into job step edit.

Hope this helps someone, it took me DAYS to figure out.

thank you... It's realy helpful to me.

The following is my update list,

\\Server\E$\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\DTExec.exe /DTS "\MSDB_ATC\PACKAGE_NAME" /SERVER "SERVER_NAME" /CONFIGFILE "\\Server\R$\\PACKAGE_CONFIG.dtsConfig" /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF /REPORTING EW

Problem on Sync Access database

Dear all,

I have a software written in C#, using RDA to sync access database from desktop. But it is tricky that some time during "Pull" data from SQL Server Agent, my PDA tell me "A request to send data to the computer running IIS has failed. For more information, see HRESULT".

This also happening when I try to unplug the ethernet cable from my desktop however the push and pull actions did not required to go through internet.

Here are part of my codes

Hi Tony,

We have see this problem of coonection error on pulling out the network cable. It dosent happen all the time, but sometimes. We are working on this and this would be fixed in RTW. In meanwhile, if you simply restart the PC (with the ethernet cable still pulled out) and try to sync it should work.

About the first problem you mentioned, connection error while pulling (i understading is in this situation, yiu are nit unplugging the ethernet cable), it would help if you could provide some more information.

Thanks

problem migrating db

I have an access database project that is having problems
since I have migrated the database it connects to. It
connects fine, but all of the server objects show (dbo)
after them. I think the (dbo) issue is related to the
sql user account setup. The user account no longer maps
to a domain account as it had been with the previous
server.
Here is some background information about the migration
and installation of sql server:
I am trying to migrate a database to a new server that is
running windows 2003 and sql server 2000 sp3. I have
copied a backup from the old server to the new server,
and performed a restore. However, when I restore the
database, the users in the database no longer have the
login name (the domain account associated with the user)
mapped. I can delete the accounts and recreate them, all
except the dbo user, which has a lot of objects owned by
it. Is there a way to remap this dbo user to the domain
account that I previously had it mapped to?
During the installation of sql server 2k, I do get an
error stating that sql server sp2 and less is not
supported on the version of windows I am running. I
doubt this is the problem, because I have updated it to
sp3.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason
Hi
dbo is the database owner if you do
sp_helpdb dbname
Then it will show the database owner. In general it is usually better to
have dbo as the owner of the objects in the database.
If you want to change the database owner look up the stored procedure
sp_changedbowner in Books Online.
For granting access to the database server check out sp_grantlogin and for
the database see sp_grantdbaccess. It is usually better to grant access to
Windows Groups (which your users belong to) rather than to individual
accounts.
The error message regarding SP3 is normal, upgrading straight away to SP3
means that you will be ok.

Problem listing data

Please tell me what I am doing wrong. I have some problems using Crystal Reports. I have for an example an Access database with a table called "Authors". I connect to the database using the server explorer in VS.NET 2005, I create an OleDbConnection and a DataAdapter. I use the Generate Dataset option from the DataAdapter to generate a Typed DataSet called dataSet1. I load data into the DataSet using the Fill method from the DataAdapter. Then I insert a new Crystal Report Document Using the Wizard and I add as data source From the Project Data/ADO.Net Datasets the dataset1.Authors. I add all the fields from the dataset and I add an Crystal Report Viewer control to the main form. I use the folowing code to set the ReportSource filed of the viewer:

CrystalReport1 cs = new CrystalReport1();
this.crystalReportViewer1.ReportSource = cs;

Ok, when I run the Application the Crystal Report Viewer it lists nothing from the DataSet data. What is wrong?I found a solution by adding a magic line of code:

CrystalReport1 cs = new CrystalReport1();
cs.SetDataSource(this.dataSet11);//here it is!
this.crystalReportViewer1.ReportSource = cs;

Problem linking to tables in SQL Server 2003 using MS-Access 2000

Hi,

I have an MS-Access database on a shared drive. The Access database has tables linked to a SQL server database. When I try to query the tables in MS-Access database by accessing the share drive,I get the ODBC--call failed error. So I tried creating an ODBC driver for the SQL Server and when I try to link the tables,no tables are displayed. Can anyone help me out with this problem?

-Ruth

If your Access Database has both Code and Data, you should separate them, Put the Data on the shared Drive,

The Code mdb is your client application and can be Linked to SQL-Server thru ODBC

create an ODBC connection to SQL-Server, So Your Client mdb app has both linked Tables to SQL Server and To the Shared Access Database.

You can not link to SQL Server thru an mdb indirectly.

The mdb just has tables linked to SQL Server.I tried creating a ODBC and linking the tables. But it did not work. But when I tried to link to tables in the Northwind database,I am able to do so.I think it is a SQL Server access issue. But I am not sure where exactly the issue lies.

Those are links to the SQL Server table, not the Actual table, so if you want, you can create link to SQL Server by Craeting a ODBC connection from your Control Panel.

Then in your Access app, add linked table using the DSN that you created.

You do not need an mdb on shared drive. if It does not have any local tables.

The once you compiled and distributed you app. On every PC, that it is installed the DSN should be created.

Problem installing pubs db in MSDE

On executing the following command:
osql -E -i instpubs.sql
I am getting the following error:
[Shared Memory] SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
[Shared Memory] ConnectionOpen (Connect())
The environment is:
1. Windows XP Professional
2. MSDE was installed using the download file 'SQL2kDeskSP3.exe' dated
5/24/2003.
3. Sample database scripts were installed using the download file
'SQL2000SampleDb.msi' dated 4/20/2004.
4. The osql command sequence was found in the
'ReadMe_SQL2000SampleDbScripts.htm', that was installed along with Sample DB
scripts.
I have done this successfully last year at my home computer. As far as I
remember, I have not used 'osql' to install the pubs and Nortwind databases.
But unfortunately, I don't remember how I did it earlier as my notes is
missing. Now I am doing it on a office computer. I am able to access the
MSDE server through VB.NET normally without any problem.
ThanQ...
Are you running OSQL on a local machine? Against a default instance?
Try specifying the server\instance name with the -S parameter.
This error doesn't have anything to do with the script you passed with the
-i parameter, it's an indication that SQL Server cannot be found (it isn't
started, name resolution isn't working, your protocol isn't accepted, etc.)

|||Thankyou for your prompt. Actually I tried -S parameter with either Computer
Name or Instance Name individually.
Now I tried with both of them separated by a back-slash. This is actually
the 3rd example in the read me doc. But I was interpreting the
'ComputerName/InstanceName' as 'Computer Name or Instance Name'.
Now it got installed. The syntax I used is:
osql -E -S <ComputerName>\<InstanceName> -i instpubs.sql
