Problem installing SQL 2005 on a Windows 2003 DC

Hello to all,

we try to install an SQL 2005 server on a Windows 2003 server that is also a Domain controller. In discussions of july last year, Dan Jones said :"Unfortunately in setup you cannot change the default account for all services. So there is absolutely no work around for this problem. This will absolutely be fixed by RTM - "

Can anybody help me in that way. We tried installing with our latest CDs (december 2005)

It's not clear what your problem is. Are you having trouble installing? If so, what is the behavior you're seeing.|||The problem is during installing. Despite the fact that we allocate a domain user account as user for the service accounts, we have a error message "Failure creating local group SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser$<servername> and the installation does not continue.|||The user that your running setup as doesn't have the correct permissions on the DC to create a new group. To work around this have the group created prior to running setup. In addition, if you don't have permission to add users to a group you can add the domain user to the group prior to running setup. During setup it'll check for the existence of the group and that the user is part of the group. If you set this up prior to running setup you don't need the create group and add to group permissions.|||

I set up different security groups having the name of the desired groups:

SQLServer2005DTSUser$SRV05FIL01

SQLServer2005MSFTEUser$SRV05FIL01$MSSQLSERVER

SQLServer2005MSOLAPUser$SRV05FIL01$MSSQLSERVER

SQLServer2005MSSQLServerADHelperUser$SRV05FIL01

SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$SRV05FIL01$MSSQLSERVER

SQLServer2005NotificationServicesUser$SRV05FIL01

SQLServer2005ReportingServicesWebServiceUser$SRV05FIL01$MSSQLSER

SQLServer2005ReportServerUser$SRV05FIL01$MSSQLSERVER

SQLServer2005SQLAgentUser$SRV05FIL01$MSSQLSERVER

SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser$SRV05FIL01

Those groups have as members the user that is running the setup, domain-user and domain-admin. The problem is still the same: error message: "Failure creating local group SQLServer2005SQLAgentUser$SRV05FIL01$MSSQLSERVER".

As we have a DC, there is no way to declare local groups.

I can send you the logfile if desired.

|||Go ahead and log a bug using: http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/ProductFeedback/|||

Create those groups on you 1st domain controller , force a replication of AD and you have all these groups on your new server . the installation of sql will now find these groups and set the security on it..

Problem installing SQL 2000 on SBS2003

Hi,
I am getting an error right after it asks if the server is local or remote.
It says that a previous program installation created pending file operations
on the installation machine. And that i must restart the computer. I've
restarted...doesn't make a difference. The server has MSDE for sbs
installed. Not sure what to do.
Thanks,
Andrew OuellettePlease try the following:
1. Run Registry Editor
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder
3. Go to SYSTEM folder
4. Go to CurrentControlSet folder
5. Go to Control folder
6. Go to Session Manager folder
7. Double-click on the PendingFileRenameOperations key
and remove everything from the Value Data section
This ought to do it, I hope!
Thanks,
Dee

problem installing sp4 on msde 2000 release A

Hello,
When I try to run the setup with the parameters I need (I have a default
instance installed already) to upgrade MSDE 2000 the setup program runs with
a blue screen on background and a modal window appears showing me the
parameters (like /i /p /v etc.). It seems to me that the setup is somehow
messed (I wonder if has something to do with the Windows Installer). Can
anyone help?
Thanks!

Problem installing SP4

Hi, when attempting to apply SP4 to a SQL cluster, we are getting the
following message.
Buffer Overrun detected!
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the programs internal
state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be
terminated.
This happens just after entering the account required to update both cluster
notes. The account is a domain admin account.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Services (IIS) servers must always have a unique network name and an IP address resource. You must remove any such non-default dependencies before you install SQL Server 2000 SP4. No dependencies other
than those supplied by the SQL Server setup must be used, except to validate whether SQL Server is online and available for the client application.
For example, if you have MSDTC resource in the SQL group and if MSDTC is dependent on SQL Server Network Name and SQL IP Address then you may have this issue. If this is the case then you will need to
remove the dependencies and then re-run the setup.
Also, make sure that you have followed the SP4 pre-installation checklist (see link below).
If you still have the same problem, then the next step will be to review the logs. I would start with the sqlsp.log (created on the node where you ran the SP4 setup). You can also cut and paste the log for us to review.

|||Hi,
I checked the dependencies. It doesn't look like anything is dependent on
SQL Server other than SQLAgent which I believe is correct. The only thing
that I think is weird in this setup is that MSDTC is in the cluster quorum
resource group...
Anyway, here is the content of sqlsp.log.

Problem installing SP3a

I have kind of a messed up server I think. It had two instances of SQL
Server installed and I removed one.
Now, I'm getting an error trying to schedule run a scheduled DTS job. I
looked it up in the knowledge base and the best answers were to re-install
the service pack. So...
Reinstalling the service pack failes because it looks like the service pack
wants to authenticate itself to the SQL Server but can't. My guess is it
can't find the right instance to use to authenticate.
Does anyone know where I can set this? It sees the instance and brings it
up during the installation process, but both SQL Server authentication and
Windows Authentication both fail. I get the error message "Setup was unable
to validate the logged user. Press Retry to enter another option, or Cancel
to exit setup."
I tried the resolutions in Q814844 but they were either already set or
didn't make a difference. I'm guessing it might have something to do with
the second instance throwing off the installation so it doesn't know where
to authenticate itself.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
GaryDid you use "sa" and the corresponding password for the same ?

Problem installing SP2 on active-passive x64 cluster

I just tried to apply SQL 2005 Std SP2 on a cluster, and all succeeded except for the Database Services. I've looked about and can't see any specific information for this. The Summary.Txt is below. I thought I was following the appropriate steps, according to the SP2 Readme.

Thanks for any help. (I'm at the client today)

Hey Bob,

Check out this KB Article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929151

It references a slightly different error number, but the error messages appear to be the same.

Thanks for the information. That actually led to the solution. It turns out that the log on the passive node held the answer. The system couldn't add the account to the AD group. Now, why it couldn't I don't know (the account had rights to change membership to the group), but I had to run the SP2 installation using Domain Admin rights. Once I did that, life was good.

Thanks again for the lead!

Bob

|||

Glad to help out and glad you got it working!

Eric

|||

I had the same problem, even though it was on the active node, and with a 32-bit cluster. The fix was to add the account that SQL Server was running under into the Domain Admins Group. Then it installed, then I removed that user from the Domain Admins group.

Thanks

|||

I followed the fix above and it fixed my problem. I running 2k3enterprise with sql2005entx64. I had to add the virtual network name to lmhosts and enable netbios(and lmhosts) on the public nic of each node(two node cluster). Will we ever turn off netbios?

Thanks to the above users for the good links...(Eric)

Have you checked the acls on the files within the directory?
Have you excluded database files/directories from any anti-virus software
being used?
Have you switched of the indexing service?

There seems to be some issue with Backup exec files (which start with a $)
if you searched google you could find out more, it may be that you only need
to delete these files. For example:

To see the ACLs right click the file and look on the security tab. Using the
advanced options will allow you to take ownerships if necessary which was
one method that stopped the issue.

>|||Hi Mark
There seems to be some issue with Backup exec files (which start with a $)
if you searched google you could find out more, it may be that you only need
to delete these files. For example:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.sqlserver.setup/browse_thread/thread/93cd42f8c13621c5/fc225bccf807fe1c?hl=en&lnk=st&q=%22Error%3A+29506%22#fc225bccf807fe1c
To see the ACLs right click the file and look on the security tab. Using the
advanced options will allow you to take ownerships if necessary which was
one method that stopped the issue.
